Choose Mastercard ® and Interac ® international transfer to make transactions anytime from your online bank or app to over 22 countries around the world  2. If you can't find your destination country, use SWIFT ® wire transfer. Transfers can be made almost anywhere in the world, at any of our branches, and there’s no limit to the amount you can transfer.

International transfer by Mastercard ® and Interac ®

 

  • Send transfers to the United States, the Philippines, United Kingdom* and 19 countries in the European Union**

  • Available 24/7, 365 days a year from your online bank or the app

  • Processing time of 24 to 48 hours, up to a maximum of 5 business days

  • Minimum of $10 per transaction and maximum of $10,000 per transaction (several transactions possible per day), $70,000 per week, $125,000 per month

  • $5.95 fee per transaction

  • Exchange rate is variable and calculated at the time you make the transaction

 

N.B. Some correspondent banks may charge additional fees on the payment sent. 

* UK countries and territories: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and British Virgin Islands.

** Available European Union countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain.

Example, if you send $1,000 you'll have:

  • A $5.95 transfer fee

  • A conversion depending on the exchange rate

For example, with an exchange rate of 1.40, your beneficiary will receive 710.03 units of currency, minus any additional fees that may be charged by their banking institution 3.

SWIFT ® wire transfer

 
  • Transfers can be sent to any country (except Iran, North Korea, Syria and Russia)

  • Only available at our branches

  • Processing time usually takes between 2 to 3 days, but this may vary depending on the destination

  • No amount limits

  • Commission fee (0.34% is calculated on the amount shipped and converted to the currency of the account with a minimum fee of $20 and a maximum of $70) 

  • Exchange rate is variable and calculated at the time you make the transaction  

  • Transmission fees are extra ($15 for Canada and the United States, $20 for all other countries)  

N.B. Some associated banks may charge additional fees on the payment sent.

Example, if you send $1,000 to an account outside of Canada or the United States, you’ll have to add:

  • A $20 commission fee (0.34% of the amount, max $70) 

  • A $20 transfer fee

  • A conversion depending on the exchange rate

For example, with an exchange rate of 1.40, your beneficiary will receive 685.71 units of currency, minus any additional fees that may be charged by their banking institution 3.

If you encounter fraud during an online transfer, you can be reimbursed as long as you are not at fault and you have taken the necessary steps to protect your transactions.

What’s the difference between a SWIFT/BIC, IBAN and ABA code? 

SWIFT/BIC, IBAN and ABA codes are used to identify banks and bank accounts during an international transfer.

A SWIFT/BIC CODE


The SWIFT/BIC (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication/Bank Identifier Code) is the international identification code of a bank.

IBAN


IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the code used to identify bank accounts and the bank of the recipient for transfers in Europe.

ABA 


The ABA (American Bankers Association) code is used to identify banks in the United States.

The limit for Mastercard® and Interac® international transfers is $10,000 per transfer (multiple transfers are allowed per day), $70,000 per week and $125,000 a month. There are no limits for SWIFT wire transfers, but you’ll have to go to one of our branches.

Be advised that funds can be withheld or returned to sender if there’s incomplete or missing information.

You can have your transfer sent directly to your branch. Make sure to have the following information ready:

  • Name and recipient’s address

  • Recipient's banking information (SWIFT/BIC and IBAN depending on the destination, account number and identification code)

  • Name of the financial institution and address of the recipient's financial institution branch   

  • Reason for the transfer

Exchange rates for foreign currency are automatically calculated from the moment you begin your transaction.

If you make an international transfer using Mastercard or Interac, you can follow the status of your transfer from your online bank or from the app. The following information will be displayed:

  • Pending: The transaction is being processed (amount already has been removed from your account) 

  • Successful: The transfer has been received by the recipient's financial institution 

  • Refused/Cancelled: Transfer was not successfully completed (failed or refused transaction); you will receive an email to reclaim your funds 

  • Refunded: you have successfully claimed your funds following a declined or cancelled transfer

 

For SWIFT transfers, you won’t be able see the status of your transfer. 

Some associated banks may have additional charges on the payment sent. 

You can’t cancel an international transfer. In certain cases, including fraud, National Bank will do everything it can to stop the reception of an international transfer. Also note that despite the irrevocability of a transfer, it can be cancelled or refused by the recipient's financial institution. You would then get the funds back.

To send money to your Natbank account: 

  • Sign in to your online bank
  • Click Send money, in the left menu. 
  • Click Add a recipient, then on International transfer and follow the steps. 
  • Enter your Natbank account information to transfer funds into your chequing account; select Current account as the account type. 
  • Enter 067091764 as the ABA number. 
  • Then, enter the information as it appears in your Natbank file to finish creating the recipient and transfer the money.
